Managing your server hardware to minimise problems

From time to time, it’s important to check over your server environment and server hardware. Making sure that these items are easily identifiable and maintained can reduce downtime in the event your server is offline.

Verify your backups are working

Checking your backups in ACR is easy. The current backups status is clearly shown at the top of the menu in every ACR window. If you double click the “Backup” message, you will see a detailed screen of each backup type and its status.

Things to check

  • The status message says “OK”

  • The date after the “OK” message matches the current date

Know your network and server hardware

Whether your server is in a rack, standing on a shelf or in a cabinet it is quite likely there is a lot of clutter and other ‘unknown’ items in same space which can be confusing and difficult for a support rep to help identify over the phone.

To make it easy for any staff member to get assistance from support, it will be beneficial for them to know what the following items are, what they look like and are clearly labeled.

Key items to label are:

  • The ACR Server

  • The network switch

  • Internet Modem

  • UPS (Connected to the ACR server)

Environmental Checks

Keep the server cool and well ventilated and the server should be kept clear and away from dusty or damp/wet areas and if possible stored off the floor on a bench or shelf.

Monitor your server for error lights

We recommend checking your server indicator lights daily for errors and issues. These indicator lights are on the front of your server and are green when they are happy. If the lights turn red or amber then there is an issue which should be addressed urgently. Call support as soon as you see any error light for us to investigate.

Check remote management cable

The IMM module will will assist ACR with being able to remotely view hardware issues with your ACR server and assist with the repair process.

To assist ACR and IBM/Lenovo technical staff it is advisable for you to connect your remote management console known as the IMM port on the back of your server to your internal network. This port can be identified by a spanner and the works “imm2”

Check server physical security

Your server is critical to your business. It needs to be stored in a location that cannot easily be damaged, kicked or accessed by the public.

If it’s not safe, consider moving your server away from customers and into a secure location only accessed by authorised staff.

Getting Support

As soon as you notice an issue call ACR Support on: 02 4725 2020

Having as much information as possible when you contact us will help speed up the process of identifying what the fault is and the action required.

  • Server Make: (eg. IBM or HP)

  • Server Model: (eg. x3450 M4)

  • Where the error light is located: (eg. Top right on front of server)

  • If the light has a picture/icon, what is it? (eg. Hard disk symbol, fan symbol)

  • If known, when did the error light first appear?

  • If possible, send a photo

This basic information should be enough to help start the diagnosis.
