Selecting the best UPS

When upgrading or replacing your UPS it is a good idea to think about what type of devices you should connect.

ACR Support recommends you have the following devices connected to a UPS where available:

  • Your ACR server: If it has dual power supplies it is best to plug both of them into the UPS or consider a 2nd UPS as a failover/redundant option.
  • Network Switches: It is advisable to connect these to the UPS especially the one for the ACR server to ensure network connectivity.
  • Routers: These should be connected to your UPS to allow ACR support remote access to your server if you require assistance in gracefully shutting down your server.
  • Additional Servers: Do you have an other servers that handle emails or files? Then it is a good idea to ensure they are connected to their own UPS to ensure that there is no down time.
  • Miscellaneous Hardware: The console display for your ACR server to enable safe shutdown of your server.

You should ensure you select a UPS with the correct power output with a little headroom for expansion or ware in the future.

It is also worth noting that a UPS will not last forever and generally have a limited lifespan of a few years and things like power fluctuations, storms, and high temperatures can all cause the batteries to age at an accelerated rate.

It recommended to replace the UPS or their batteries at least every 4-5 years.
