Extending the life of your Printers

Despite the ever-increasing use of digital technologies to view and share information, printers are still integral to the day-to-day operations of many businesses. This means that making sure that your printers are well maintained is essential, but this also has the pleasant side-effect of reducing long term costs by extending the life of your printer!

General Laser Printer Maintenance

Before continuing on, make sure you consult the manual for your specific model of printer and follow the guidance given by your manufacturer! The advice given here is general, and may not be applicable to your printer. With that out of the way, here are some tips for taking care of your laser printers:

Regularly clean your printer

Dust and dirt can be harmful to the general functionality of your printer. Dusting your printer is a simple process and takes no time at all. Also make sure that the paper tray is regularly cleaned so that dirt does not end up within the printer itself, as this can lead to internal component breakage.

Use the official toner cartridges

While it can be much cheaper to buy third party or unofficial cartridges for your laser printer, these parts are usually much lower quality compared to the official cartridges from the manufacturer. Additionally, they can wear out printer components at an accelerated rate which defeats their main benefit in the first place.

One of the more popular models we see, the TTP-247 printer has some specific maintenance procedures which can be found in the manual. In particular, the following parts require maintenance at specific intervals:

  • Printhead – requires cleaning when changing the label roll
  • Platen Roller – requires cleaning when changing the label roll
  • Sensor – requires cleaning monthly

The other parts which require cleaning and the instructions to do so are found in the TTP-247 manual, which you can find online at https://www.tscprinters.com.

Bixolon SRP-350plusIII POS Printer

Another popular printer, the SRP-350plusIII has a simple cleaning procedure as detailed in the manual by Bixolon. They recommend you do the following when cleaning the printer:

  1. Open the printer cover and remove any paper
  2. Clean the print head with a cotton swab moistened with an alcohol solvent
  3. Clean the paper sensor and paper roller with a cotton swab and a dry cloth
  4. Insert a paper roll and close the printer cover

Taking care of your printers can save you time and money in the long run, with the only cost being the small amount of effort put into maintaining them.
